HRG Reporting and Risk Management Applications: A Case Study

Visionär worked on two cloud-based corporate services reporting applications for HRG between Spring 2007 and Spring 2008, both the hub application—HRG Reporting—and an integral module of the Reporting application—Travel Watch—as part of a series of ongoing work with the company prior to their transformation into their in-house technology subsidiary Frædom.

The reporting product aims to help achieve cost-savings through enhanced management information about travel-spend through a configurable dashboard. Companies are provided information such as Trip Duration, Top 10 Travellers and CO2 emission levels, reasons for travel, values comparing Online bookings vs. Traditional bookings (those made typically by phone) and Total Spend forecast. Together with additional reports, the application’s users have the ability to easily splice together executive summaries to produce reports for presentations.

Visionär worked on the design of the application from initial key requirements gathering through subject domain research, interaction design, initial visual design direction and ultimately to final presentation. Key parts of the design process were: ideation around the interaction design to allow users to configure their dashboard and research around data-visualisation—working out the most appropriate type of graph to quickly convey the information set. Often we take for granted the way that information is presented to us. However, often there is a whole host of work to build views that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also efficient to process; think the design “standard bearer” AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts) airport and other transportation signs that at a glance make it easy to understand the world around you.

At the point of delivery, reduced time schedules meant that both testing and implementation were pressed through to be carried out internally at the point of launch. We hope that the nifty little animation that accompanied each panel configuration was as entertaining to users as it was to us. We were pleased that our work appeared to exceed our initial requirements.

Travel Watch

Travel Watch allows travel managers to get up-to-date information on the movement of their travellers

Travel Watch was co-sponsored by Red 24, the global risk management company and an evolution of a fledgeling product, People Tracker. Travel Watch allows travel managers to get up-to-date information on the movement of their travellers—individual traveller location, the number of travellers in a country, and alerts based on data feeds from Red 24 about different levels of geopolitical or nature-based threat. Travel Managers can access full traveller itineraries and issue warnings through to individual travellers as well to groups.

A significant part of the project was about organising the back-office information corporate already had, answering questions like: how many travellers are traveling on British Airways or American Airlines flights globally? Or how many of our travellers are in Mexico or Germany? This was information that the companies and their travel management had but typically were struggling to make use of effectively because of the lack of a unified easy-to-use portal that the project aimed to provide.

Travel Watch and HRG Reporting is used by companies such as Goldman Sachs and Merrill Lynch with travellers worldwide as well as SMEs who consider risk management an essential part of the business strategy.

HRG Reporting and Travel Watch were launched at the Business Travel and Meetings Show in London in February 2011.
